Islands of stability

As we build software, sprint by sprint, feature by feature we sometimes loose ourselves in the process.

Back in the olden days when speed was of less consequence than quality, islands of stability would break the rhythm and introduce a period of consolidation, where the business value built in the previous phases would be enjoyed by the end users, the technical debt and cruft would be cleaned by the engineers and the plans for the future fine tuned by the product masterminds. This well deserved period of moderate activity would also allow the team to enjoy the fruit of their labor and pause, escaping the daily rut of delivering.

This is hard to swallow as we give praise to the shrine of efficiency and continuous improvement but simply stopping for a while and examining our work is healthy for our minds, our souls and the business overall.

Progress is not achieved by luck or accident, but by working on yourself daily.
