Embracing transience

My usual strategy to prevent burnout and boredom is to start side projects, small experiments. These projects either evolve into products or fade away, but whatever happens I always learn new things and enjoy the process so I always get something out of it.

I don’t frequently engage in this because I want to develop them into products with paying customers before exiting, which often takes months or even years. Long-term support for these products doesn’t appeal to me—I find that users’ constant needs and desires are better managed by others.

I’ve done this four times with B2B SaaS but I’ve never built something consumer-oriented and I think there’s a lot I need to learn in that space so my next “get out of your comfort zone so you can learn” target for this year is to build at least one consumer app that has paying customers.

I plan to explore some ideas and document my journey here, hopefully journaling things that I can come back to in the future.
